Speaker Bio:
Dr. Fogler is probably most widely know for his development of a particular yellow book that we all know
very well – he is the author of Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering. He is also very well known
at the University of Michigan where he has taught for over 40 years and is the Vennema Professor of
Chemical Engineering. However, he has a tie to Illinois because he received his BS degree at the
University of Illinois in 1962. Then he moved west and earned his MS and PhD degrees from the
University of Colorado in 1963 and 1965. His career at the University of Michigan began right after
graduation. During his 40+ years at the University of Michigan he received numerous awards from the
university and from the chemical engineering department including: Excellence in Research Award –
’97, Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award ’96, Excellence in Service Award – ’95, Excellence in
Teaching Award - ’93, Phi Lambda Upsilon Teaching and Leadership Award, Distinguished Faculty
Service Award, along with many other awards and honors. Dr. Fogler has also been very active in
AIChE throughout his career. For example, in 1980 he received the Chemical Engineer of the Year
Award from the Detroit Section of AIChE. He was named an AIChE Fellow in June 1994, and he
received the Warren K. Lewis Award for Contributions to Chemical Engineering Education, 1995. He
had also held a wide range of AIChE offices including: AIChE Group Chairman 6, Education, Director of
AIChE, and Director, CTOC - AIChE. Today Dr. Fogler is chair elect of AIChE, and he will soon be
leading our organization.
